Scribe Sagheer Baidar passes away

Prez condoles journalist Nora Chopra's death

BHOPAL: One of the doyens of Urdu journalism of his era and better known for his zeal to promote (को बढ़ावा देना) academic excellence(उत्कृष्टता) among Muslim students, Sagheer Baidar died in Bhopal on Thursday. He was 82. Never shy to express his opinion, Sagheer sa'ab, one could spot the Aligarian (alumuni of Aligarh Muslim University), where he studied around 1960.

An award winning orator, Baidar left student politics after he was convinced(राजी करना) to become a journalist with a leading newspaper. He moved to Delhi to join 'Dawat'. During the Emergency after the Dawat's editor was arrested and jailed, Baidar took over as its editor. His stood by his belief in free and fair journalism.

Born in an affluent(समृद्ध) family, Baidar at the peak of his career, moved to Bhopal and continued to work as a journalist. Wearing his trademark Aligarian pajama (that cuts just above the toes), sherwani and brown shoes, the journalist turned into a crusader promoting academic excellence in students of the minority community. He founded Muslim Education and Career Promotion Society (MECAPS).

In 3 decades, MECAPS helped thousands of students with scholarships. The society became synonymous(समानार्थी) with the veteran journalist. Baidar also provided scholarships to members of other communities. "Bhopal represented the culture of its time and importance for education. At one point of time, you had women behind the veils, who were fluent in Persian and yet had never stepped out of their homes," said
