Badminton Association of India President Akhilesh Das Gupta Passes Away

Badminton Association of India (BAI) president and former Union Minister Akhilesh Das Gupta passed away after suffering(दुख) a heart attack on Wednesday. Akhilesh, who was the son of former UP chief minister Banarasi Das, was Minister of State for Steel in UPA-I and served as a mayor of Lucknow and held many posts in the Congress for nearly two decades. Akhilesh Das Gupta was a Prominent Educationist, Professor, Indian Politician & Philanthropist. He was the son of Freedom Fighter Late Babu Banarasi Das, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

He held country’s most prestigious office as ‘Member of Parliament’ (Rajya Sabha) for 18 years serving three consecutive(लगातार) terms of 6 years each from November 1996 to November 2014. He held the office of the Minister for Steel from January 2006 till May 2008 under Dr. Manmohan Singh Government during UPA-I. 

He actively served as Secretary of Congress Parliamentary Party between 2003 to 2006 under the Chairmanship of Sonia Gandhi.
