Phogat sisters to spread the message of cleanliness

Phogat sisters to spread the message of cleanliness South Delhi civic body names award-winning wrestlers(पहलवानों) brand ambassadors of its cleanliness campaign. Commonwealth Games medal-winning wrestlers Geeta and Babita Phogat were on Thursday named as brand ambassadors of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s sanitation (स्वच्छता) campaign.

Swachh Bharat Mission

As part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the Phogat sisters, who are from Bhiwani in Haryana, will be the face of the SDMC’s efforts to improve cleanliness and solid waste management(कचरा प्रबंधन)  in south Delhi.

Apart from the wrestlers, an international para-athlete would also be named as a brand ambassador soon, SDMC Standing Committee Chairperson Shailender Singh said.

The brand ambassadors would lend their face, and voice to print, television and radio advertisements.

The Standing Committee on Thursday passed a proposal to appoint a public relations firm for its campaign to highlights the achievements of the SDMC.

Mr. Singh said none of the political leaders of the SDMC would feature in the campaign. With the municipal elections in April and the model code of conduct expected to be enforced in March, Mr. Singh said the SDMC would have had to remove the photos of leaders if they are used in the campaign.

Sanitation survey

He also added that the SDMC was losing eight points in the Swachh Survekshan (sanitation survey) for not having brand ambassadors. As per the rules of the survey, an urban local body gets four points for having identified brand ambassadors and eight points for having active brand ambassadors.

In the 2016 Swachh Survekshan, the SDMC had placed 39 of 73 local bodies surveyed by the Union Urban Development Ministry. It is hoping to improve its rank this year.
