Karnataka makes Kambala legal; PETA points to Jallikattu deaths

Karnataka makes Kambala legal; PETA points to Jallikattu deaths BENGALURU: Doing what Tamil Nadu did to legalise Jallikattu, the Karnataka Assembly on Monday passed its own legislation to remove Kamabala buffalo races from the purview (क्षेत्र) of animal cruelty laws. The state’s lawmakers on Monday passed the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2017 in the
Assembly which, once it gets the President’s assent, will make it legal to hold bullock cart(गाड़ी) races.

The latest amendment exempts (छूट) bull and bullock cart races from the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. While tabling(पेश)  the bill, the government stated that the Prevention of Cruelty Act 1960 was enacted to prevent the infliction (सज़ा) of cruelty (क्रूरता) and suffering on animals. However, considering that Kambala is a part of Karnataka’s tradition and in interests of ensuring the survival of native breeds of cattle, it was decided to exempt the event from the Act.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was quick to criticize the southern states’ recent moves to legalise village sports that involvement an element of cruelty to animals. The NGO’s India chief executive officer Poorva Joshipura said, “Jallikattu events this year have already resulted in numerous bull and human deaths in recent weeks. These are sports in which the animals are often spurred with nail-studded prods. In cockfights, knives are tied to roosters' feet to make the fights bloodier. And in bulbul bird fights, trapped birds are intoxicants. Cruelties inherent in these events violate the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960.''
