Tamil Nadu: Inauguration of Jallikattu called-off in Madurai The symbolic inauguration of Jallikattu sport scheduled in Madurai has been called off on account of wide-spread protests. Earlier, Tamil Nadu Governor C Vidyasagar Rao had signed an ordinance, paving the way for holding annual Jallikattu event across the state from today onwards. After much wait, the annual event has finally
returned to Tamil Nadu after a ban of two years. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has, on behalf of the state Government and people of Tamil Nadu, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his support in enabling Jallikattu to be held in Tamil Nadu once again.
Meanwhile, security arrangements have been beefed up across the state to meet any eventuality in the wake of state-wide protest.
Madurai's district magistrate KV Raghva Rao says all steps being taken to ensure that no injury to bull or the person participating in the Jallikattu event.
However, the traditional sport of Jallikattu was organised in Pudupatti village Tiruchirappalli.
More than 100 bulls and over 500 bull tamers participated in the celebrations today with traditional fanfare and fervour.
