Ola signs MoU with NSDC to train 100,000 drivers in 3 years Cab aggregator Ola has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) for training and skill development of 100,000 drivers in the next 3 years, with an investment of Rs 100 crore. Overall the company mentions that it plans to add over 50 lakh drivers in the next 5 years.It’s
not clear what this partnership will entail, although a previous such MoU with Maruti Suzuki to train 40,000 individuals and drivers in safe driving over the next 3 years provides drivers with assistance in getting commercial licenses and vehicle financing after a 30 day training program. This included classroom sessions on vehicle controls and mechanisms, road signage, rules and markings etc., and soft skills on driving etiquette, bad driving habits, grooming and manners. In practical sessions, drivers would also get trained on safe and efficient driving, simulation before driving, risk perception, defensive driving and emergency handling.
Note that Ola had launched a dedicated training center for drivers in partnership with Rise India and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in Chapra district in Bihar, in October. At the time, the company said it would launch such training centers in each district in the country, reiterating its 50 lakh drivers in 5 years goal. Meanwhile, competitor Uber says that it will onboard 1 million drivers in India by 2018.
Ola had also tied up with Mahindra to offer vehicle financing for drivers, and with FlexiLoans to offer Ola’s drivers with ‘business and need based’ loans of up to Rs 100,000. The company had also tied up with SBI to extend vehicle financing for its drivers under a new programme called Ola Pragati and announced a new programme to incentivize drivers to purchase new CNG cars. Other than this, it had partnered with Indian Oil to provide its drivers cashbacks of Re 1 for every liter of fuel filled at IOCL stations across India.
