Italian PM announces resignation after losing refrendum

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi announces resignation after loosing a referendum on constitutional reform by a wide margin; Italy plunges in a new phase of political uncertainty and possible economic turmoil. In Italy, exit polls have predicted an overwhelming rejection to constitutional reform proposals on which Prime Minister Matteo Renzi staked his political future. Polls called the vote for the No camp
by a margin of at least 54 per cent to 46 per cent for the Yes camp. Soon after the picture became clear, Prime Minister Renzi announced his resignation.

The referendum was regarded as a barometer of anti-establishment sentiment in Europe.

The vote asked about plans to streamline parliament but it was widely seen as a chance to register discontent with the Prime Minister.

The projected result was in line with what opinion polls had been indicating up until November 18, after which the media were banned from publishing survey results.

The defeat and Renzi's departure will plunge Italy in a new phase of political uncertainty and possible economic turmoil.

After Renzi's step down, President Sergio Mattarella will be charged with brokering the appointment of a new government to run Italy until the next general election, scheduled for spring of 2018.
