Kavalam Govindankutty Nair passes away

Kavalam Govindankutty Nair passes away KOCHI: Journalist, translator and writer Kavalam Govindankutty Nair, passed away, here, on Tuesday. He was 83.  He was the first child welfare officer of State Child Welfare Committee. Nair had started Balaramam magazine for children after resigning as the child welfare officer and started Kavalam printers and Balavadi publishing house in
Thiruvananthapuram.  Under the pseudonym Vishnu Sharma, he had translated numerous books, including Valmiki Ramayana in prose, from Sanskrit for children.

Nair’s first anthology of children’s literature ‘Meena’ was published through Sahitya Pravarthaka Cooperative Society in 1949 while he was a Class X student.  He, along with K S Mani and Kuttanad Ramakrishna Pillai, had served as a member of the editorial board of Malayali.

He is survived by children Kavalam Prem Kumar, Kondoor Sreekumar, Kavalam Shyamkumar and Lakshmi. Sunitha, Krishnakumari (undersecretary Finance Department) and Anju are daughters-in-law and Gireesh Dutt is the sons- in-law. His wife Ramani Nair predeceased him. He was cremated on Tuesday.
