International symposium on ocean de-oxygenation to be held in Goa on December 3

International symposium on ocean de-oxygenation to be held in Goa on December 3 PANAJI: There is an urgent need for scientific enquiries into ocean de-oxygenation since low oxygen can bring about profound changes in the metabolism of life forms inhabiting therein. This directly impacts marine ecosystem functions and services through changes in food web structure and biodiversity. Recent
estimates of the production and loss rates of fixed nitrogen suggest that oxygen deficient oceanic area is expanding, which bears many implications for global climate. Marine waters deficient of oxygen affect the ocean bio-geo-chemistry and fisheries in different ways.
World renowned experts working on the causes and concerns of decreasing oxygen levels in global oceans will address such issues at a symposium scheduled to be held in Goa from December 3-5.
These experts through deliberations during this symposium would aim at addressing and providing future directions to decipher the factors affecting rates of marine nitrification and denitrification to assess the role of microbial processes involved in nutrient cycles in the face of lowering oxygen levels.
The international symposium on "Microbial Responses to Ocean Deoxygenation" in association with UNESCO-Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) is being organised by the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa.
