Assam to Make Majuli Country’s First Carbon Neutral District

Assam to Make Majuli Country’s First Carbon Neutral District  Assam government has initiated a project on December 14, 2016, to make river island Majuli the country’s first ever Carbon Neutral district by 2020. The project titled ‘Sustainable Action for Climate Resilient Development in Majuli’ (SACReD, Majuli) was initiated by Assam’s department of Environment and Forest and was
launched by Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Biodiversity and Climate) A K Johari at Majuli. The aim of the project is to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
iv. Initially the carbon neutral agenda will focus on mitigation through forestry activities and biodiversity conservation, followed by other interventions over the next three years.
v. The project will be designed and implemented in partnership with other departments of the district for which a district level committee under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner has been constituted.
