Two Indian students are among top 10 selected for the inaugural Mayor of London’s International Student Innovation Awards 2016 launched to showcase London as a welcoming destination for international students. The two Indian students are Malav Sanghavi and Mustafa Khanwala, who were placed fifth and 10th in the contest to identify and recognise the most innovative international students in London.The top
prize went to Lucy Alessandrini, who made a violin from spider’s silk.
Sanghavi designed a smart amputee socket which can be adjusted via an app to suit the individual’s needs, while Khanwala produced an app that stops queuing in shops, allowing one to immediately pay for goods and services.Another Indian student, Surabhi Mittal, was commended for a tea set made from papier-maché.
The awards, which attracted 49 entries from 17 universities, were handed out at an event on Wednesday, attended by London mayor Sadiq Khan and Karan Bilimoria, president of the UK Council for International Student Affairs, among others.
Sadiq Khan said: “The incredible range of talent on show in these awards celebrates the best of the capital and clearly demonstrates that London is open to talent and ideas from across the globe. We need to do all we can to ensure that London remains the best and most welcoming destination for international students.”
Bilimoria, who has been working to increase student numbers from India – declining in recent years – added: “I can see the huge potential for each of the entries on the shortlist to disrupt commercial industries or save time and money for consumers. It is fantastic that London can help these international students from across the world to showcase their ideas in this way”.
The awards are devised by London & Partners, the Mayor’s official promotional company and is also supported by the UK Government’s Education is GREAT campaign and the British Council, Cambridge English, IDP Education and The PIE.
