NEW DELHI: The urban development ministry is preparing a plan for promoting "green transport" in cities in a bid to reduce vehicular pollution and put a brake on the rising number of private vehicles.Sources said the proposal primarily focuses on cycling and plying of electric vehicles for public transport and for last mile connectivity as well. Heavy industries ministry is also working on a plan of allocating nearly Rs 300 crore for
providing electric buses for some of the cities. Officials said the plan of preparing a road map for green transport started recently, but it has got a push after air quality in Delhi and other cities in north India deteriorated dangerously."The central ministry will prepare the enabling provisions and guidelines for such transport, which states will have to implement. Government can also provide some financial assistance to some of the cities to undertake initiatives to introduce modes of travel that don't cause pollution and run on clean energy," said a central government official.
He added that any appeal or campaign to shift people from private vehicles to public transport won't bear fruit until the necessary facilities are created in each city. "One of the major components will be promoting non-motorized transport", said the official.
