Kumar Mangalam Birla, the new chairman of IIM-A

Soon after Naik's resignation, a search committee to select the new IIM-A chairman was formed. The panel included Naik as its head, with Sanjay Lalbhai of the Arvind Group, Pankaj Patel of Zydus Cadila and D Shivakumar of Pepsico India as members. The HRD ministry has appointed the 49-year-old chairman of the USD 41 billion industrial conglomerate of Aditya Birla Group, Kumar Mangalam Birla
as the new chairman of Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A).

It has been confirmed that Birla, who is currently the chairman of IIT Delhi, accepted the position.

How Birla became the new chairman of IIM-A: Recent developments

Since January, the premier B-school has been without a regular Chairman after A M Naik, the CMD of Larsen & Toubro, stepped down citing "paucity of time"
Soon after Naik's resignation, a search committee to select the new IIM-A chairman was formed. The panel included Naik as its head, with Sanjay Lalbhai of the Arvind Group, Pankaj Patel of Zydus Cadila and D Shivakumar of Pepsico India as members
The committee shortlisted the names of Deepak Parekh, Chairman of Housing Development Finance Corporation; R Seshasayee of Infosys and Pawan Munjal, the CMD of Hero Motocorp. However, the HRD Ministry, then headed by Smriti Irani, had rejected the list
Later, headed by Pankaj Patel, a new three-member panel was constituted. The panel dropped the name of Hero MotoCorp CMD Pawan Munjal and included the name of Kumar Mangalam Birla
The names were discussed and approved by the institute's Board of Governors in late September and sent to the HRD Ministry for approval, as stipulated by the Memorandum of Association (MOA) between the IIM-A and the Ministry
A discussion on the matter is believed to have taken place with the present HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar on his recent visit to the IIM-A.
