Govt suggests using KVIC outlets for distribution of subsided pulses

After post offices, the Centre is now exploring the option of selling pulses through khadi bhandar outlets located across the country to cool down prices. A substantial quantity of pulses would also be sold through the commodities exchange NCDEX.  With the festival season approaching fast, govt is leaving no stone unturned to ensure availability of all the essential commodities during ongoing festival
season. Inter-Ministerial committees on prices meet under the chairmanship of Secretary Department of Consumer Affairs Hem Pande to review prices and availability of pulses.

The govt has decided that besides offering Chana (chickpea) to the State Governments, its significant quantity should be released immediately through National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited or NCDEX to cool down prices.

The meeting also suggested exploring possibility to use KVIC outlets for distribution of pulses besides postal network.

The committee was informed that Department of Consumer Affairs is working on modalities with Department of Post to start distribution of pulses through its network at the earliest.

The subsidized pulses are already being distributed through Kendriya Bhandar, Safal and NCCF in Delhi and NCR Region, NCCF is also selling the pulses in some other metros also.

Earlier in the week, Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha has reviewed availability and the prices of essential commodities at a high-level meeting with Secretaries of Consumer Affairs, Agriculture, Food & Public Distribution, Commerce, Expenditure and others.

Cabinet Secretary directed Department of Consumer Affairs to consider all options to check the prices of the commodities.

Consumer Affairs Secretary meanwhile asked states to impose stock limits and to carry dishoarding drives.

India's pulses output is likely to surpass previous records in coming months on back of surge in sowing following a normal monsoon rain this season.
