Citizenship Act: Joint Parliamentary Committee discusses amendments

A JOINT Parliamentary Committee (JPC) discussed various issues related to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and heard representations from a number of civil society groups Thursday. eaded by BJP MP Satyapal Singh, the committee took stock of the problems being faced by minorities from Pakistan and Bangladesh, who have been living in India, and their views on the proposed
amendments to the Citizenship Act, 1955. “We have heard the views and suggestions of associations of minority communities from Bangladesh and Pakistan. We wanted to know the difficulties faced by them after coming to India and also discussed the proposed amendments to the Citizenship Act with them,” said a JPC member. “No major decision was taken today,” he added.
The Citizenship Act, 1955, defines the concept of Indian citizenship and lists ways to acquire it, explicitly denying citizenship to all undocumented migrants.
