Former Italian President Carlo Azelgio Ciampi Passes Away At 95

Former Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi has died at the age of 95, news agency Ansa has reported. As well as serving as president from 1999 to 2006, Ciampi was prime minister from 1993 to 1994. As treasury minister in the late 1990s he played an important role in Italy’s adoption of the euro as its currency. As the news broke Italy’s current prime minister, Matteo Renzi tweeted his
government’s condolences to Ciampi’s widow, and paid tribute to the former head of state:

“A thought of gratitude goes to a man of the institutions, who served Italy with passion”, he said.
