Educationist Harish L Mehta nominated to Tamil Nadu FCI panel


CHENNAI: The Union ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution has nominated Chennai-based educationist Harish L Mehta as a member of the consultative committee of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) for Tamil Nadu with immediate effect for a period of two years, an official release said. Mehta is the secretary and correspondent of M N M Jain Engineering College and D B Jain College of Arts and
Science in Chennai. He is the chairman of Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu branch. He is also member of a search committee constituted to recommend names to the Governor for the appointment of the vice-chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University.
The committee will inspect procurement, storage, distribution operations and godowns and will look into complaints of quality of grains stored and malpractices. According to the release, all inspection reports will be forwarded to the ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution and FCI.
The committee will also discuss and make recommendations on the procurement, distribution, quality, storage of food grains, transit and storage losses. It would function as the interface between the FCI and state government on the functioning of the Targeted Public Distribution System, the release said.
