Coast Guard honours 4 fishermen for bravery


MANGALURU/KARWAR: Indian Coast Guard Station (ICGS), Karwar, organized its first-ever bravery award ceremony on Sunday and felicitated four fishermen for showing exemplary courage in saving seven fishermen struggling for life in the middle of the sea, 15 nautical miles off Bhatkal coast, early this month.In the ceremony, Coast Guard presented bravery awards, certificates and cash reward of Rs 10,000 to Gopal
Moger, Suresh Basava Kharvi, Navin Masti Kharvi, and Srinivas Narayan Kharvi of fishing boat 'Matsya Deep'.
These fishermen along with ICG teams had saved seven fishermen who were thrown into the sea when the boat they were sailing in capsized due to rough sea weather. One fisherman was missing and his body was recovered from Maravanthe beach in Udupi district after two days.
Indian Coast Guard has arranged this award ceremony to boost the morale and felicitate the gallant act of the fishermen who rescued others in need.
Coast Guard has also been successful in setting up example for other fishermen to be conscious of their obligation and encourage them to adhere to safety measures and carry life saving equipment whenever they venture into sea, noted K R Suresh, DIG, Commander, Coast Guard, Karnataka.
Bhatkal MLA Mankalu Vaidya, senior officials of ICGS, police and coastal security police were also present.
