Continuing his visits to places associated with the life of Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa, on the second day of his visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi got an Enthusiastic welcome in the Phoenix Settlement where locals welcome him with songs and dance. Prime Minister visited the Phoenix farm where Gandhiji spent formative years of his political career. Prime Minister paid rich tributes to
Gandhiji at the settlement. Prime Minister also visited the Sarvodaya Ashram which was Gandhiji's residence in Phoenix which is termed as a house for justice and a home for compassion. Gandhiji established the community settlement called Phoenix at Inanda, some 20 km north of Durban, in 1904. He established the settlement as a communal experimental farm with the view of giving each family two acres of land which they could develop. He believed that communities like Phoenix which advocated communal living would form a sound basis for the struggle against social injustice. Prime Minister Modi also went around the exhibition in phoenix and penned his thoughts in the visitors' book after lighting a lamp. To mark his visit to the historic settlement.
