Onion, potato crisis may worsen, traders surrender licences

Onion and potato traders operating in Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) and other market committees in Nashik district of Maharashtra have decided to surrender their licences. The decision has been taken after the state government issued an ordinance to delist fruits and vegetables from
the scope of the market yards and recover the commission amount from the retail buyers instead of farmers.
While trading in most APMC-controlled wholesale markets began from Thursday after a week-long strike following a meeting with the government, trading in Lasalgaon — the biggest wholesale hub in the country for onion — and other 11-odd market committees in the region remained closed since traders here were unhappy with the outcome of the meeting.
