WITH recurrence of unruly affairs at Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri creating serious public outrage, the Odisha Government on Thursday constituted a one-man judicial commission to suggest reforms in its management. The commission will be headed by retired judge of Orissa High Court Justice Bimal Prasad Das. He would be assisted by former temple administrator Mahimohan Tripathy. “The commission will give
suggestions on disciplined rituals, darshan for devotees, training and education to servitors, conservation of heritage and propagation of Jagannath culture,” said Law Minister Arun Sahu .
Officials sources said the government was forced to constitute the judicial commission after the Puri district collector was manhandled by a section of servitors when he had opposed a family member of a servitor from climbing upon Taladhawaj, the chariot of Lord Balabhadra.
Invoking Sri Jagannath Temple (Administration) Act, 1952, the Government said the judicial panel’s terms of reference (ToR) will include a review of security structure at the 12th-century temple in view of threats posed from terror outfits.
