England skipper Alastair Cook breaks Sunil Gavaskar's record of most runs as a Test opener!


A month after breaking Legendary Sachin Tendulkar's record of the youngest batsmen to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket, England captain Alastair Cook has now earned the distinction of scoring the most number of runs as a Test opener, eclipsing Sunil Gavaskar's 30-year-old world record.

Playing in his 123rd Test match, Cook stroked his way to a score of 81 in England's reply to Pakistan's 339 in the 1st Test at Lords, in London. The southpaw broke the Little Master's record when he played Mohammad Amir's delivery for a brilliant cut stroke for a four to reach 61.
Cook started his innings on an attacking note, punishing the Pakistani quicker bowlers at ease. He was on course for a hundred, but while on 81, he dragged one onto his stumps the stumps off Amir.
Most runs as a Test opener
Sunil Gavaskar had played 119 Test matches scoring 9607 runs in 203 innings and operated at an average run-rate of 50.29. Gavaskar has 33 Test hundreds and 42 Test fifties to his name, he has also remained not-out on 11 occasions. While, England skipper Alastair Cook has so far featured in 123 Test matches scoring 9630 runs in 219 innings, having operated at an average run-rate of 46.52. Cook has registered 26 hundreds and 47 fifties and has remained not-out 8 times.
On a record-breaking spree, the England skipper's next milestone can be equaling Sir Don Bradman's feat of 29 centuries.
