Bank unions call All India strike on July 29


KOLKATA: Bank employees called for a one-day strike on August 29, protesting IDBI Bank privatisation and mergers of State Bank of India and its associate banks. About 10 lakh bank employees and officers of all public sector banks, private banks and foreign banks will observe a full day all India bank strike on Friday, said a press statement issued jointly by bank unions on Wednesday. Unions, the umbrella organisation of nine bank unions, has been opposing central government's move towards privatisation of public sector banks, privatisation of IDBI Bank by reducing the government share to less than 49%, mergers of public sector banks and mergers of State Bank of India and its associate lenders.

The employee associations have also demanded stringent action against wilful defaulters. "It is a matter of great concern that bad loans are increasing disproportionately causing adverse effect on the health of the banks and national economy," said Rajen Nagar, president at All India Bank Employees' Association.
