Amaravati will be new sports hub: Minister

Major sports infrastructure will come up at Amaravati and all the 13 districts will host at least one event in the 2019 National Games, according to Sports Minister Achannaidu here on Thursday. Interacting with media persons after his maiden visit to the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) office at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium, he said importance was given to infrastructure and
to meet the financial requirements the annual budget was increased from Rs. 30 crore to Rs. 250 crore. “We are also taking the help of the Central Government to spruce up quality infrastructure,” Mr. Achannaidu said.
‘Shortage of coaches’
He agreed that there was an acute shortage of coaches in Andhra Pradesh affecting the performance of the athletes.“I have already instructed the Principal Secretary, SAAP Managing Director and Chairman to identify the disciplines and do the needful. If there are no qualified coaches in A.P., we can get them from other States,” he said.Mr. Naidu said there was a need to appoint district sports development officers. “As we are also finding it difficult in getting officers, we are approaching the police department to depute their officers appointed in sports quota. They will be suitable as they will have enough sports knowledge.”The Minister said archery would be encouraged at Araku valley in Visakhapatnam District and Maredumalli village in East Godavari District.“Archery is doing well in Andhra Pradesh. These places are suitable for the sport to flourish,” he added. He said the State government was keen on developing stadiums at Vizag, Vijayawada and Guntur on private-public partnerships. “We have asked the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to hand-over IGMC stadium to SAAP and the stadiums under civic body’s control will be handed over the sports department for development in Guntur and Vizag districts.”

He said 74 stadiums were coming up in various mandals under the constituency development scheme with each one costing Rs. 2.70 crores.
