4 engineering students in Gujarat design car for ‘divyang’

Creating a more equal world for people who are differently abled requires not only out of the box ideas, but also a change of mindset. Students of University of Vadodara have a lesson for all of us. They have used their creativity and skills to bring more mobility into the lives of divang people. The government is running programs for the benefit of the differently abled or Divang people, including Accessible India mission, so as
to bring happiness into their lives. The good news is that people too, especially the youth, have changed their attitude towards differently abled people. Engineering Students of the University of Vadodara in Gujarat thought of creating something special in the last year of their course. They decided to build a car, one that is different designed for differently abled people that would take them from place to place without much trouble. Four engineering students and their professor designed this special car for people with special needs. Normally people would need two feet and two hands to operate, clutch, break, accelerator, gear and steering wheel in a normal car, but here all these 'controls' have been made operational through a single lever.

"There are limitations for handicapped persons. A person with an amputated leg or hand can operate this vehicle. We can develop other mechanism to cover all the conditions. The car has been built with certain limitations. We have attached clutch, break and accelerator with a single lever," said Shah on Wednesday

The team of students are also thinking of patenting it soon.

"All the four students have been working with me for the last one year. They have perfectly done the work assigned to them. We have planned to develop something for the physically disabled persons to resolve their transportation problem. Our future plan is to patent it," Burgujar added.

The students are also talking to some larger companies about manufacturing it commercially. It could play a key role in the accessible India mission and will be great boon to the divyang people. One must salute these students for trying to improved the lives of people with special needs.
