Syria's Assad appoints new prime minister

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has appointed former Electricity Minister Emad Khamis as the new prime minister of the war-ravaged country. Assad tasked Khamis to form a new cabinet. The announcement comes two months after Assad's Baath party and its allies won the majority of seats in the country's parliament in an election that was considered internationally as a fraud. The 54-year-old engineer will replace Wael al-Halqi
who had held the post since August 2012. He has been sanctioned by the European Union which accuses him of sharing culpability for violence committed against Syria's population.
