Rs 1 crore solatium to slain cop’s kin

Chennai:Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today announced solatium of Rs one crore to the family of a policeman, who was murdered by robbers in Krishnagiri district last week. Munusamy of Hosur police station, who was attacked by a gang of robbers, succumbed to injuries in hospital.

Recalling that she had already ordered to give Rs five lakh financial aid to his kin, Jayalalithaa said she is however of the firm opinion that the solatium was not enough to the family of Munusamy.

"Hence, considering the rich sacrifice made by Munusamy, I have ordered to give Rs one crore as solatium to his family," she said.

The Chief Minister further stated that she has instructed the Chief Secretary of Tamilnadu government to increase the financial aid being given to police personnel who died and sustained injuries in valour acts, and to issue a new government order in this regard, by replacing the existing one.

Munusamy (45), Sub-Inspector Nagaraj and another policeman were part of a police team that had traced the suspects linked to a chain-snatching incident. The suspects had allegedly snatched a gold chain from a Panchayat Union Primary School teacher.

She was on her way home from Uddanapalli on a two-wheeler, when two persons on a motorcycle came from the opposite direction and snatched her gold chain. Parvathy, who suffered injuries, was taken to Uddanapalli Government Hospital first and later admitted in Hosur GH.

The police traced the two suspects, along with two other gang members to a spot near the Hosur Railway Station. When they tried to apprehend them, the men fled into a three-storey building. And when the police tried to nab them, they stabbed Munusamy and Nagaraj in the abdomen and Dhanapal in his palms.

While Munusamy died, Nagaraj and Dhanapal are getting treatment in hospital. Munusamy is survived by wife and two children. His daughter, who recently finished her schooling, secured 1,187 marks in her board exams and wants to pursue medicine, police said.

He was laid to rest at his native village near Veppanahalli.
