Multi-class championship in HSW-2016

The monsoon’s arrival on Sunday could not have been more sweetly timed for the Hyderabad Sailing Week (HSW). By the time the annual regatta gets under way, a week from now, the winds would have settled, making conditions conducive for some stiff competition. “HSW-2016 will be an important milestone, because for the first time, we will be organising a multi-class championship,” said Lt. Gen. Gurmukh Singh,
President, Laser Class Association of India (LCAI). In the years gone by, competitions were held only in three variants of the Laser Class, viz, the Standard, the Radial and 4.7.

Featuring this year would be other Olympic class boats such as the 470, the Hobie 16 and Enterprise. “We will have a record number of participants this time, with figures likely to cross 200, unprecedented in the country so far,” said Maj. Gen. Sanjeev Khanna, Vice Commodore, EME Sailing Association (EMESA) and a national medallist himself.

Top national sailors will take part, many of whom are expected to compete in the Asian Games, the Olympics and the World championships. Governor ESL Narasimhan will inaugurate the championship.

The 10-day gala, jointly hosted by the LCAI, EMESA, Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS) and Secunderabad Club, will have over 200 different types of boats on the waters of the over 400-year-old Hussain Sagar. A green brigade walkathon, a biker’s rally, an FM Radio Jockey on the water are added attractions besides the Regatta Ball that will bring the curtains down on the extravaganza.

The LCAI was founded in 1986 with a view to promote sailing in the country, while the EMESA was formed in 1964.
