Essar’s general counsel Hemant Kumar resigns to join L&T

MUMBAI: Hemant Kumar, group general counsel of the Ruia-controlled Essar Group, has recently put in his papers to join finance-toengineering conglomerate Larsen &Toubro as group general counsel. A legal veteran of three decades, Kumar will oversee big-ticket litigation and arbitration and will also advise the group companies on strategic matters, including acquisitions, said a person familiar with the development.
"Mumbai-headquartered L&T has roped in Hemant Kumar to streamline the legal processes, keeping in mind the current complex regulatory environment," said the person. "The role is more to do with advising the senior management on strategic issues, and not just restricted to legal issues."
When contacted, Kumar confirmed the development, but refused to share details about his new assignment. "He (Kumar) has decided to pursue his professional career elsewhere and move on," Essar said in an email response.
